Diamond Clarity

When diamonds are mined from the earth in places like Canada and Australia they do not come out of the ground looking all that spectacular.  The crystallized form of carbon that is diamond comes out of the ground looking very ordinary. These “rough” diamonds look a lot like a piece of gravel. It takes the hand of a very skilled craftsman to cut a diamond to shine and sparkle like the diamonds you will see in our collection.

The first point we would like to make about Cut is that it is by far the most important of the 4C’s.  It is the only “C” that is controlled by the hands of human beings.  The color, clarity, and the carat weight of a diamond are all determined by nature.  We have seen many examples of diamonds with high color (E, F, G’s) and high clarity (VVS and VS) that were simply not very pretty to look at.  The shine, sparkle, and brilliance of a diamond have nearly everything to do with it’s cut.  And just like everything else there are very well cut diamonds and there are very poor cut diamonds.

The second idea that you need to be familiar with is the “Cut” does not mean shape.  We cannot tell you how many times we sit down to deal with a new client, who has shopped at the chain stores, and is trying to compare diamonds prices and when we ask what type of cut quality the “E” “SI1” 1.03ct diamond that he looked at had, his response will be “it was round”.  The easiest way to get duped when buying a diamond is to know nothing about the quality of it’s cut.  So often we see people who are so enthralled in the clarity and color of a diamond that everything else is secondary.  Our warning to these people, be very careful.  You are ripe for the picking.  Most jewelry stores will give you a very brief description of a diamond’s cut (if any at all) and say things like “this diamond is well cut”, this is not enough information for you to make an expensive decision on.  Many stores sell on the “just enough information to get by” platform which we do not agree with.  We don’t want your eyes to glaze over with too much information but we want you to understand that the beauty of a diamond is in the quality of it’s
